A message from the Deline Self-Government Team about implementing self-government

The Deline Final Self Government Agreement was ratified by a majority of eligible voters. To ratify the agreement, 50% plus one of all eligible voters were required to vote yes. When the ballots were counted, 64.5% of eligible voters had cast a yes vote.

Since then, the GNWT and Canada have begun preparing to pass laws in their legislatures recognizing the self-government agreement.

In the community, a Transition Team made up of managers of the Deline First Nation, Deline Land Corporation, Charter Community of Deline and the Housing Authority will continue to work together planning the transition from separate organizations to one government. Their work will include planning and carrying out administrative tasks (deciding which staff will move to which building, how all of their policies and procedures will work together, bringing together their financial systems, etc.) to make sure that on the day self-government takes effect, no programs or services currently delivered in the community will be disrupted.

Self-government will be phased in. On Effective Date, the Deline Gotine Government will be responsible for programs that are already being delivered in the community. As the new government develops its capacity, it will take on additional authorities described in the self-government agreement.

We have a Facebook page  ( Our Deline ) and this website which will be updated with new information to make sure that beneficiares are informed of our progress toward making self-government a reality. Both pages have been updated with pictures of the celebrations held in Deline when the news of the successful ratification was announced.

We want to express our heartfelt thanks to every person who voted and who has shared their views with us. The views and opinions of all of our members are important and will continue to be very valuable to us as we move forward. We encourage you to remain informed and to share your opinions or ask questions in the weeks and months to come as we work to make self-government a reality for Deline.
